Tips for Picture Perception And Discussion Tests

SSB is arranged that evaluate the candidates for becoming officers in the IAF. The board value the suitability of the candidate for becoming an office. Protocol of appraisal system which constitutes personality, intelligence tests, and interviews. The tests are of both types i.e. written and practical task-based. Five-day personality and intelligence test in SSB. The different tests are conducted on different days. The SSB Interview is the second stage of the selection process for the AFCAT and other defense exams.

In SSB, the PPDT (Picture Perception & Discussion Test ) is a part of the screening test and many defense exams like UPSC NDA, Navy,  AFCAT, etc. Here, we are going to share some tips on how to excel in PPDT. PPDT stands for Picture Perception & Discussion Test (PPDT) in SSB. PPDT is a screening test in SSB. When you appear for the SSB, The tests conducted on the first day are the PPDT test and the OIR test. The Officers Intelligence (OIR) Rating test comprises reasoning questions that are verbal and non-verbal.

If the aspirants already know the tips it will be truthful for an aspirant to write a good story in Picture Perception & Discussion Test for the SSB interview. The Screening test is done on Day 1 of the Interview. The Screening Test has two parts- the OIR test and PPDT. PPDT Test Will Have The Following Stages

  • Picture: In this test, aspirants have shown a  blurred picture on the screen for 30 seconds. Aspirants will be given only 4 minutes to write their observations of the picture. Aspirants will mark the characters and their moods in the picture on the left-hand side of the paper that is provided.

  • Group Discussion: In this test, the candidates will be divided into groups of 10-18 students. All candidates will be asked to narrate the story they have written. The candidates will then be asked to discuss their stories and come to a common depiction of the story within a given limited period.

How to Crack the Picture Perception Discussion Test(PPDT)

1. Good Narration in Picture Perception

  • You will speak fluently and avoid using complicated words while speaking. The focus should be on getting your idea through to the audience rather than impressing them.

  • Maintain a good posture and maintain a smile on your face. 

  • The narration shows good power of expression, so you have to speak fluently without stammering or stuttering

  • Always start to wish such as “Good Morning” and end with a “Thank You” even if your time is over.

2. Good Story Writing

The aspirants can follow the PPDT tips for SSB interview entries. The tips are given below

  • You should Keep in mind the time limit of 4 minutes and frame the length of your story accordingly.

  • Divide the story into parts explaining the personality and its main character, the story behind the picture, and the conclusion.

  • Don’t explain everything in this picture and do not leave the story unfinished.

  • The characters of the story properly identify and choose a central character and write the age of the main character as yours.

  • You should try to create and follow a positive storyline. A positive ending will be a good conclusion.

Group Discussion Tips

The Picture Perception & Discussion Test discussion(PPDT) phase starts after the last person stops speaking his story then the discussion starts automatically after the previous candidate finishes their story. First, starting the group discussion makes a good first impression.

If you are starting first make sure you speak relevant points and also start the group discussion with a brief introduction of the topic.

  • Do not give the power of the discussion and allow other participants to speak their points.

  • You should be a good listener and you have to be active for share your points. This is noticed by the invigilator.

  • Try to stay on neutral grounds. There can be instances where the GD goes off-topic, so try to keep the pace and topic on track.

  • You should maintain eye contact with other participants and never look toward the examiner during the group discussion.

  • Do not extend your topic for too long with better reasons speak in small intervals.

Rules for the Picture Perception & Discussion Test discussion(PPDT)

There are some important rules for the Picture Perception & Discussion Test (PPDT). You should know about the rules which are helpful for you which are time management, screening tests, etc.

  • First, the office will tell you to brief you about the test in the presentation hall.

  • You have to write the no of characters and the action of your story.

  • Sometimes a clear picture and sometimes a blurred picture on your screen for about 30 seconds. You provide a PPDT sheet. In these 30 seconds and you have to determine the picture very carefully and recall all the details like the number of characters, their mood, gender, and age.

  •  Details have to be marked inside the box and printed on the sheet provided by the SSB.

  • You will be given a time of about 1 minute to note down the details of the characters.

  • All these details have to be Written M/F/P for male, female, and person (P, if gender is not clear) respectively. +/-/0 for positive, negative, and neutral moods respectively, and their ages as perceived by you.

  • Circle the main character or hero of the story.

  • You have only 4 minutes to write your story.

  • After some time, write a story that should follow a pattern that is described.

  • Described the action of the story, it could be in 4-5 words like helping the poor and rescue operation, etc.
